Options for small permanent plans:

Guaranteed Universal Life  (GUL)
Pros:  Lifetime no lapse guarantee at a fixed premium; least expensive permanent life insurance; dial a guarantee period option with many plans; cost per 1,000 less than a “par” whole life, in the quote above a $50k Guaranteed UL is less than the $25k “par” whole life which does offset the disadvantage of a level death benefit if products are compared at the same premium
Cons: level death benefit; premium payments for life;  late payment sensitive,  lapses generally 30 to 60 days without premium payment: must maintain payment for life, though note that policies can be structure as limited pay, like a 10 pay, 10 years of payments, or 20 pay.

“non par”  Whole Life
Pros:  Lifetime guarantee fixed premium; guaranteed cash value accumulation; paid up insurance option
Cons:  level death benefit;  lack of premium flexibility; no dividends; higher cost per 1,000 than a GUL

Is a “par” whole life worth the extra money?   At age 57, yes.  Dividends will provide high value flexibility in later life.
